Spending Is Up For Valentine’s Day 2014 But Fewer People Are Buying Gifts

Hey Cupid, don’t forget this Friday is Valentine’s Day.  A new survey shows spending is up this year for Valentine’s Day but fewer people are celebrating by buying gifts.

The National Retail Federation survey, as reported by TIME,  found people plan to spend three dollars more this year on Valentine’s Day, with an average of $134 on gifts.

However, just 54% surveyed plan to celebrate the holiday, down from 60% last year.

Almost 20% say they don’t plan to spend a dime on their sweetie for Valentine’s Day.  Kind of makes you wonder why, doesn’t it?

Furry friends aren’t forgotten on February 14th.  Close to 20% surveyed buy gifts for their pets.

Still not sure what gift to buy your Valentine?  The results of a Chase Blueprint Valentine’s Day survey might interest you.  70% would rather be surprised than pick out their own gift,  chocolate is favored over flowers, tech toys are preferred over jewelry and dinner out is more popular than a meal at home.

Tech toys over jewelry?  Not me.  I’d much rather have a piece of jewelry to treasure forever than the latest gadget which will be outdated by next Valentine’s Day.  How about you?
