Zach’s Top 5 Favorite George Harrison Songs [MUSIC]

Keystone/Getty Images

Last week, I brought you my favorite John Lennon songs, and going in order of my favorite former-Beatles members, it's George Harrison's turn. Although George didn't say much, a.k.a the 'quiet Beatle', he spoke volumes with his music. I mean who can forget his songs with the Beatles like “Here Comes the Sun” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” right? But, as a solo artist is where, I believe, he really, really expanded as an artist. So, today, I would like to share with you my Top 5 Favorite George Harrison Songs as a solo artist.

"Living in the Material World"

This song back from 1973. In the song, Harrison talks about the "material world" and mentions Paul and John--of course, referring to his Beatle bandmates. Also, Ringo Starr plays the drums on this song.

"Miss O'Dell"

This is a fun song. This one makes my list because it just sounds like George is having such a great time singing this song. It's almost like we are listening to an inside joke or something. According to Wikipedia, "The song was written in Malibu in April 1971, when Harrison was first becoming aware of the Bangladesh crisis, and was a tribute to his friend and Apple confidante Chris O'Dell.[13] According to O'Dell, she had failed to make a meeting with Harrison at the ocean-front house he was renting, so he instead wrote a song imploring "Won't you call me, Miss O'Dell?"[14]"

"While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

Although some may find this cheating, I had to include this song. Even though he wrote it with the Beatles, it's still his. What can I say? This song is just amazing. According to Wikipedia, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was ranked #136 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time", #7 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time, and #10 on their list of The Beatles 100 Greatest Songs."

2

"Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)"

If this song could tie for number one, it would. It's an amazing song. And, what a message--"Give me love, give me peace on earth." Everything lines up in this song musically--the guitar, the vocals, everything.

"Bangladesh"

Here it is at number one--Bangladesh. It's a sad song, but it has a message. "My friend came to me with sadness in his eyes. Told me that he wanted help before his country dies. Although I couldn't feel the pain, I knew I had to try. Now I'm asking all of you to help us save some lives." According to Wikipedia, the song "was inspired by Ravi Shankar and written in response to the disasters, both political and natural, that had occurred in East Pakistan from November 1970 through the first half of 1971."
