As a former tour guide at the F.X. Matt Brewery during my college days, I was weaned on Utica Club Pilsener Lager Beer. Now, according to the brewery, there is a two-week shortage of UC draught beer in central New York. Two weeks? It might as well be eternity, as UC on tap is my beer of choice in taverns. More thoughts on the subject.

According to Meghan Fraser, Marketing/Public Relations Director for the brewery at saranac.com:

"Due to high demand and an unexpected spike in sales, the F.X. Matt Brewing Company has announced it's popular local beer, Utica Club draught, is out of stock for the next two weeks.

Increased demand for retro brands and a growing movement to support local products is contributing to Utica Club's 15% growth year to date, and a whopping 28% growth in July, which will unfortunately leave UC fan's mouth's dry until more beer can be brewed.

"While our sales are strong, it's frustrating to get caught short and leave our loyal fans thirsty," said Fred Matt, president and fourth generation. "We are increasing the number of brews and will be back in stock shortly. In the meantime, we have plenty of UC in bottles and cans."

I recall about 20 years ago, during the summer that the brewery introduced Saranac Black & Tan, they had a beer shortage as well. Apparently, they underestimated the response and demand for the new dark and heavier Black & Tan brew, especially in the summer and ran out. I remember two people in a store arguing over the last case of Black & Tan on the shelves one day.

Thankfully, as Fred Matt noted above, at least UC is still available in bottles and cans. Schultz and Dooley, where are you when we need you most?

Obviously, this will be the subject matter of our 96.1 WODZ "Beer Break At Work" at 3:20 p.m.
