If you've had cabin fever these past few months, waiting to get out in the wild with fishing pole in hand, your day is comin'. Trout fishing season opens Tuesday, April 1. My favorite opening day was April 1, 1969, when my buddy and I caught our limit by 12 noon.

Before you head out the the creek, you'll need a New York State fishing license. Here's more from dec.ny.gov:

"General Fishing Licenses

Type Resident Fee                             Nonresident Fee

Annual $25 (ages 16-69)                 $50

$5 (ages 70+)

7-day $13                                             $31

1-day $5                                               $10

Valid Annual License Dates

Annual fishing licenses are valid one full year (365 days) from the date of purchase.

You need a fishing license if you are 16 years and older."

For NYS regulations regarding size and limit, visit dec.ny.gov for specifics on local waterways.

And, when you're out fishing and asked how they're hitting by another fisherman, remember the standard fisherman's answer, "I haven't had any bites, but I know they're in there".
