Top 20 Classic Hit Songs For Your End Of The World Playlist

So, the world isn’t going to really end, but just in case, what are the last songs your would put on your playlist until the Big Kaboom? Here are your 20 quintessential Oldiez songs that deserve to be on your iPod before it melts…

It’s the End of the World as We Know It – R.E.M.

At the risk of being cliche, this song tops the list as a completely appropriate tune topically, of course it’s not a classic hit… Nor will it ever be if the world ends.

Last Night on Earth – U2

Assuming of course that it is indeed at midnight on the nose when we all meet our maker, this tune is a shew in for my list.

I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing – Aerosmith

Also not a classic hit, YET (well never will be now) but definitely a classic band! Just a little over a week to soak up as much life as you can before it’s all gone! Heck, throw in the Armageddon movie while you’re at it…

Stairway To Heaven – Led Zeppelin

The end will probably be more like getting beamed up, but you get the picture. Hopefully the stairway will lead north instead of south…

Don’t Fear The Reaper – Blue Oyster Cult

Do they have cowbells in heaven? Well, if they don’t then what’s the point, I mean seriously. That’s the only thing that keeps us all from fearing anything, much less that sickle-toting faceless robed dude

Imagine – John Lennon

Tack this up as a reflection piece as we contemplate our existence and it’s impending doom. John Lennon nailed this one square on the head.

The End – The Doors

This was originally about a breakup with your girlfriend, but hey we could interpret it as breaking up with say, LIFE right?

Who Wants To Live Forever – Queen

Raising my hand as high as the typical 3rd grader: Oooo, me me me me!

What A Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong

Going WAY classic here, and another reflection piece but look at this one as the soundtrack playing in the background while everything is blowing up to high heaven. I see (BOOM!) trees of green (CRASH!) red roses too (WALL OF FIRE!) I see them bloom (RUMBLE!) for me and you (SMOKE) and I said to myself (SCREAMING!) what a wonderful world… yup.

1999 – Prince

Of course Prince had a different year in mind but the spirit of the tune is intact, let’s party one last time until we are all toast. The race formerly known as humans…

I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor

For those that refuse to accept reality, this one will embolden you to take on the apocalypse single-handedly. Not successfully, but your heroism will be noted.

Only The Good Die Young – Billy Joel

Hey, as deaths go this one is spectacular so at least you didn’t die by falling out of a roller coaster or off your roof or something. If I have to go out, might as well do it in style!

Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees

Slap on your big-collared shirt and bell-bottoms and give the Mayans the finger as you strut to your death.

Bad Moon Rising – CCR

Wait is that the moon? And is it getting, BIGGER? Wait a minute, it’s coming right at us!! Bad moon, BAD!

Live And Let Die – Paul McCartney & Wings

Another good montage song while the world blows up, explosions of course timed perfectly for the explosions in the song!

Spirit In The sky – Norman Greenbaum

Assuming you’ve been good, this guy trumps Santa in the ‘he knows if you’ve been bad or good’ department. Hopefully the scale tips more on the good deeds side and you’ll be hanging with this majorly cool dude in the afterlife.

I Feel The Earth Move- Carole King

Dang straight you do… and Chicken Little ain’t gotten nothing on Carole. No crying wolf here when the sky really DOES fall.

Traveling Wilburys – End Of The Line

Tom Petty and the boys exercising their prophetic abilities… No more traveling, for ANY of us. Well, not on roads we know anyway

No Time – The Guess Who

Yup, you’re on the clock. No showing up late allowed, no sick or personal days left. Your ticket is punched and we’re all clocking out for good. Kinda puts a whole new meaning on the word ‘fired’.

Sympathy For The Devil – Rolling Stones

If you happen to miss that stairway to heaven and the spirit in the sky rejects your application, then this is the guy you’ll be meeting and he introduces himself quite sinisterly. The Stones have already met him which explains their extraordinarily long life and walking dead appearance.
