1850 – Senator Daniel Webster gives his “Seventh of March” speech endorsing the Compromise of 1850 in order to prevent a possible civil war (More info)

1965 – Peaceful civil rights demonstrators marching from Selma, Ala. are brutally attacked with billy clubs and tear gas by police in an event later called “Bloody Sunday” (More info)
