The Hobbit’s Saruman (Christopher Lee) Sings Heavy Metal? Christmas Style??

First of all, the thought of heavy metal covers of ‘Little Drummer Boy‘ and ‘Silent Night‘ is a bit tough to wrap my mind (and ears) around, but to hear those versions sung (I use the term loosely) by a dude who’s pushing 91 years of age and normally wields magic and lightsabers like crazy?!? Um…

Turns out the guy is actually a classically trained singer (WHAT?!?) and this isn’t his first rodeo with ‘devil music’.  In fact, he’s actually won awards at it! He’s totally rocking it and older than all of us could ever hope to be mind you. We may be laughing but he’s not. Come to think of it, has he ever cracked a smile?

“I was first introduced to metal when I sang with a [band] called Rhapsody,” Lee tells BBC Radio. “But what I sang was not heavy metal; I sang with a tenor. Then I worked with Manowar as a narrator, I think it was in Germany, and again, that was not me singing metal. I became rather fascinated by this, ’cause in terms of history of music, it’s fairly recent, really. And if it’s properly done and you can understand the story and you can understand what the people are singing and you have the right bands and the right singers, I think it’s rather exciting.”

Of course he’s serious about everything he does because that’s Christopher Lee for you, the quintessential on-screen villain for the past bazillion years. I mean maybe it’s not too far-fetched as heavy metal is normally associated with deplorable behavior and if he can play Dracula, I guess he’s earned the right to head-bang!
