May is a very busy month. It's National Photography Month, Grapefruit and Kiwi Month, National Bike Month and National Salsa Month--just to name a few. And, if you're a vegan or vegetarian, or someone who just likes to stay healthy, there is another "holiday" to add to the month of May. This month is National Salad Month.

Finding food in America that is 100 percent vegan can be a bit of a challenge. There's a lot of looking at labels to make sure there is no hidden dairy, meat, eggs or fish in the food. I've been a vegan for well over 5 years, so, I have become somewhat of an expert at finding food that is vegan. In some places around the world, people eat an almost fully vegetarian diet. Many of us who live in Utica have found ourselves taking the 45 minutes drive to Syracuse from time to time--whether it be for shopping, food or visiting friends and family. I find myself driving out to Syracuse at least four to five times a month. What do I do when I go out there? I mainly go for shopping (at Wegmans) and for the many vegan-friendly restaurants out there. In fact, Syracuse ranked fifth as the most vegan-friendly city in North America in 2010.
