Finding food in America that is 100 percent vegan can be a bit of a challenge. There's a lot of looking at labels to make sure there is no hidden dairy, meat, eggs or fish in the food. Many of us who live in Utica have found ourselves taking the 45 minutes drive to Syracuse from time to time--whether it be for shopping, food or visiting friends and family. I find myself driving out to Syracuse at least four to five times a month. What do I do when I go out there? I mainly go for shopping (at Wegmans) and for the many vegan-friendly restaurants out there. In fact, Syracuse ranked fifth as the most vegan-friendly city in North America in 2010. The holidays are a time for family, fun, and of course, food. And, the best kind of food, other than the main course, is dessert. Whether it's sugar cookies, gingerbread cookies or pie and cake, desserts are a staple at a dinner table during the holidays. So, what about those vegan out there? (A vegan is a person who does not eat meat, fish, dairy, eggs or honey.) What do vegans eat for dessert around the holidays? I have been vegan for about six years. I have been through many, many holidays where I could not eat the desserts on the table. So, I found some recipes for vegan treats and started bringing those to the festivities.
