Forty-Four People Die When Plane Carrying Russian Ice Hockey Team Crashes

Forty-four people were killed when a Russian jet carrying the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey team for the Kontinental Hockey League’s first game of the season crashed on takeoff on Wednesday.

It’s just the latest accident this summer involving Russian airliners — two other accidents killed a total 54 people which has led to calls for stricter safety guidelines.

A decision has been made in the case of twin brothers Nick and Nate Smith, who switched places to take a $50,000 shot at a charity hockey match last month. Whether they’d receive the prize money was in question when the family confessed that the twin who was called to participate was not the one who wound up taking the shot. Ultimately, officials decided not to award the family the money because of “legal implications.”

Eric Lindros, a bruising injury-prone power forward once appointed the “Next One,” will have to wait until next year before entering the pantheon of hockey’s greatest.

Ed Belfour, Doug Gilmour, Joe Nieuwendyk, and Mark Howe were among the four players chosen to be elected into this year’s Hockey’s Hall of Fame class, the selection committee announced Tuesday. The Class of 2011 will be inducted into the shrine Nov. 14 in Toronto.

Vancouver Riots After Boston Bruins Win Stanley Cup

Upset over the loss of the Vancouver Canucks in the decisive game 7 to the Boston Bruins 4-0, fans in Vancouver overturned cars, broke windows and set stores and garbage cans on fire. USA Today reported police moved into to try to put an end to the violence:
Tear gas mingled with the stench of acrid smoke and stale beer as riot police, truncheons drawn, moved in to quell the violence, pushing crowds away from the burning cars.Later, police cars also were set on fire. At one point, police were using flash-bangs — grenades that are designed to distract and disorient, rather than injure — to try to break up the mob, said Chad McMillan, 31, a Vancouver resident and Canucks fan. - USA TODAY
