HBO subscriptions have been something of a running joke through the TV industry, with a great many of the network's loyal fans sharing HBOGO passwords to avoid expensive cable packages, previously the only mean with which to watch shows like 'Game of Thrones' or 'True Detective.' Now, the company has finally acquiesced, and announced an independent streaming service due out in 2015.
It's been a good long while since we've heard anything from the front of 'Game of Thrones' season 5, somewhat understandable given the long road to its spring premiere, but no less taxing given its status as the most off-book season yet. HBO's 'Game of Thrones' has alarmed readers of George R.R. Martin's books from the very beginning, if only that the fantasy-drama adaptation might catch up with, or surpass Martin's notoriously long writing process. One of the reasons fans of the original books have been so cool with the major deviations 'Game of Thrones' made from the novels has been the direct involvement of author George R.R. Martin. As a producer and writer on the series, he's been present to give his blessing to the showrunners and wag his fingers at aggressive fans, but not this year. Martin will be sitting out 'Game of Thrones' season 5 altogether to finish writing the sixth book in the series, 'The Winds of Winter.'
