The events of 'Supernatural' season 8 finale "Sacrifice" sent a huge number of potential new characters hurtling from the sky, and it seems season 9 has tapped yet another 'Battlestar Galactica' star and all-around genre vet for the first of them. Tahmoh Penikett will appear in the October 8 premiere to kick off a multi-episode arc in season 9, but who might the star have fallen from grace to play?

Via TVLine, Penikett will appear in the (formerly) angelic role of Ezekiel, “a dignified warrior angel injured in the Fall” that culminated in May's finale. Penikett ('Dollhouse,' 'Arrow') is the second major 'Battlestar Galactica' alum to kick off a 'Supernatural' season, following last year's addition of Ty Olsson as Dean's Purgatory pal Benny.

Executive producer Robert Singer recently previewed that the ramifications of angels falling to Earth would indeed play out over the course of the season, adding of the potential “army” of angels “they’re not happy about being earthbound. They lost their wings, so while they have powers, they can’t teleport. Different factions will find each other.” Similarly, showrunner Jeremy Carver previewed the fallout from Comic-Con 2013, saying:

We’re going to see it’s not one unified body. We’ve got lots of angels out there with lots of different agendas. Many are feelings lost and vengeful. A world of fallen angels is a dirty, bloody, scary and, in some ways, a very human world.

Meanwhile, ‘Supernatural’ season 9 will feature the return of longtime series star Jim Beaver as his character Bobby Singer in an unknown capacity, while Felicia Day‘s Charlie Bradbury has been announced to pop up as well. Carver and Singer further previewed the CW drama’s ninth year, particularly the expanded role angels would play in the mythology going forward, and a secret that Dean will be keeping from Sam.
