Springs Arrives Today, Finally

Living in central New York all my life, I can attest to the fact that the seasons and the calendar aren't always in sync. Hopefully, when spring officially arrives today at 12:57 p.m., spring weather will arrive as well.

The arrival of spring at 12:57 p.m. today is when the vernal equinox occurs. If you don't remember that scientific term from your eighth grade science class, here's a brief review.

According to "The Old Farmer's Almanac 2014":

"The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night.” Days and nights are approximately equal everywhere and the Sun rises and sets due east and west.

At the equinoxes, the tilt of Earth relative to the Sun is zero, which means that Earth’s axis neither points toward nor away from the Sun. (However, the tilt of Earth relative to its plane of orbit, called the ecliptic plane, is always about 23.5 degrees.)

Today sunrise was at: 6:47 a.m. and set set takes place at: 6:56 p.m, giving us 12 hours and 9 minutes of daylight. And as spring continues, the days will keep getting longer."

It's been so cold this winter and right into March, that it's hard to believe that spring is actually here. I don't know about you, but I haven't seen my first robin yet.
