On Tuesday, July 8, a tornado with speeds of 100-125 miles per hour touched down in Smithfield, New York. Four people were killed in the disaster, the second most for one tornado in history. An outpour of support came from community members across New York State, asking for ways to help.

Yesterday, Andy Cash, Heather Lee, and I had the opportunity to attend the benefit in Morrisville, just one of the ways that surrounding communities were showing support.

Sponsored by Madison County Area Fire Departments, the event featured lots of food, auctions and raffles, games, a fun zone for kids, and music from The Beadle Brothers, Nashville singer/songwriter- Cassidy Lynn, Chris Taylor and the Custom Taylor Band, and more. There was also an incredible fireworks display in honor of the four who lost their lives.

Thousands of people were in attendance, including the 400+ bikers that rode their motorcycles to the benefit. That was definitely a cool sight to see!

According to the Facebook event page for the benefit, 13 affected families were reviewed in regards to distribution of funds made from the event, and will be split in ways that is fair to all involved.

In my eyes, the event was extremely successful! A personal thank you goes out to all those who donated their time and effort to the cause!

If you weren't able to come to the benefit, but still want to help, don't fret! You can mail checks to Oneida Savings Bank, 48 Albany St. Cazenovia, NY 13035, Please make payable to ‘Smithfield Tornado Relief Benefit.’
