Concerns about possible salmonella contamination are prompting a precautionary recall of some dog and cat food.

Procter and Gamble says the Eukanuba dry dog food and Iams dry dog and cat foods are being voluntarily recalled because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

No cases of illness have been reported.  However, the company warns that pets can carry and transmit the disease without symptoms.  Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, vomiting, lethargy, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite.  Pets with these symptoms should be brought to the veterinarian immediately.

The UPC codes of the affected products, most with best-buy dates in November 2014, are listed below. The lot numbers of the recalled items end with "4177" and have prefixes from 3186 through 3195.  The list could change so customers are urged to contact the company with questions about specific products.

Customers who purchased the pet food should call P&G at: (800) 208.0172 Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 6:00pm ET or visit the Iams or Eukanuba websites.
