We have finally heard the Destiny theme song featuring the Beatles' Paul McCartney and longtime Halo composer Martin O'Donnell, and it wasn't what we expected.

Thanks to YouTube user promosounds, we get to hear 'Hope for the Future,' the theme song Paul McCartney made for Destiny. With Bungie's audio team, including Halo composers Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori, working with McCartney at the famous Abbey Road Studios, we were a bit let down as to how the theme song ended up. Mind you, Destiny has a stellar soundtrack that perfectly syncs with the senses of desolation, hope and exploration the game evokes, but this song just felt off. We would hope that a former member of the Beatles wouldn't make something that sounded so overproduced. Much like Destiny's overarching story and Peter Dinklage's jargon-filled, phoned-in dialogue, 'Hope for the Future' had the formula for greatness, but ultimately felt like it didn't deliver. We really hope this wasn't one of the reasons why O'Donnell was mysteriously let go by Bungie.

'Hope for the Future' sounds like it could be the intro to a bad Bond film from the 1980s ('A View to a Kill' would be a fitting choice).

According to The Verge, Paul McCartney made the song and helped Bungie compose the soundtrack for free, citing a desire to reach a younger audience that completely missed his previous works, which we commend. For those who can't listen to the song right now, here are 'Hope for the Future's lyrics:

Some hope for the future; Some wait for the call
To say that the days ahead will be the best of all
We will build bridges up to the sky
Heavenly light surrounding you and I

From out of the darkness our future will come
If we leave the past behind we’ll fly beyond the Sun
We’ll be together, sharing the load
Watching in wonder as our lives unfold

Hope for the future
It’s coming soon enough
How fast can we achieve?
Hope for the future
It will belong to us, if we believe.
Hope that rises in the dark
Where nothing’s ever seen
Lighting undiscovered places no one’s ever been

Some hope for the future; Some wait for the call
To say that our destiny will be the best of all
And we will build bridges up to the sky
Heavenly light surrounding you and I

Hope that rises in the dark
Where nothing’s ever seen
Lighting undiscovered places no one’s ever been
Hope for the future

We still can't believe one of the most celebrated musicians in history made this song. We're sure some of you might actually like it, if you're the type to have a Nickelback track as a ringtone.

There's lame galactic video game music, and then there's metal galactic game music:
