New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada called it quits today. During a press conference at Yankee Stadium he announced that he is retiring from baseball. With his wife and two young kids by his side Posada became emotional as he thanked his family in Spanish and then his Yankee teammates.

“I could never wear another uniform,” said Posada. “Being a part of seven World Series and having five rings was something I never imagined, and being a part [of] it was just priceless. I will forever be a Yankee.”

Posada talked about going through the Yankee farm system in Oneonta, New York and switching from being a second baseman to becoming a catcher. He talked about being part of the Yankee Core Four along with Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, and Mariano Rivera. With Posada’s retirement the remaining Yankees from the Core Four are Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera as Pettitte retired in 2010. Posada has no big plans for the near future other than spending the upcoming summer with his family. When asked why he didn’t look to join another team since the Yankees weren’t going to resign him he responded by saying “I knew in my heart and I knew in my head I didn’t want to play anymore,”.

Now Yankee fans must wait five years for Jorge Posada to go on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot. Posada had a great career and has made a strong bid to get into the Hall of Fame. Only time will tell.
