NBC Renews ‘Law and Order: SVU,’ Orders New Dick Wolf Series

Law and Order SVU Chicago Fire
NBC

It doesn’t seem to matter that the original ‘Law & Order‘ has fallen by the wayside, that series star Christopher Meloni has since departed, or how old and parody-able the franchise has become, NBC isn’t ready to give up on ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ just yet.  More than just a renewal however, NBC look to keep franchise creator Dick Wolf very happy with a new deal including an order for a new original series.  More procedurals?  Read on…

According to Deadline, today NBC has made ‘Law & Order’ creator Dick Wolf a very happy man: not only will ‘Law & Order’ see a fourteenth season (with Mariska Hargitay at the helm), but the Peacock has also given a season order to Wolf’s new original drama ‘Chicago Fire,’ as well as continued his development on a military competition reality series with Mark Burnett.

Though ratings for ‘Law & Order: SVU’ suffered something of a hit in the wake of long-time series lead Christopher Meloni’s departure (He left for ‘True Blood?’  Seriously?) still brings in an impressive season average 7.6 million total viewers per episode, ranking third for NBC behind ‘The Voice‘-boosted ‘Smash‘ and ‘Parenthood’ in adults 18-49.

Wolf’s new series ‘Chicago Fire,’ one of a number of recent pickups for NBC, is described as an “action-driven drama exploring the complex and heroic men and women of the Chicago Fire Department.”  ‘Fire’ stars ‘House‘ actor Jesse Spencer, along with Taylor Kinney, Teri Reeves, David Eigenberg, Charlie Barnett, Lauren German, Monica Raymund, Eamonn Walker and Merle Dandridge
