Most Annoying Construction Projects – Utica’s Top 5

Photo by: Bob in the Morning

When people ask me, “What's up?”, I now answer them, “My blood pressure!” The reason for the recent spike in my blood pressure is all the new construction in Utica and the rest of Central New York. It seems the roads and streets I travel most are all under new construction! It's like the D.O.T planned their latest round of road repairs using my travel itinerary. Here are my Top 5 Most Annoying Construction Projects in Utica.

OVER BUDGET ROUNDABOUT!

It was the roundabout at Oneida Square that started me thinking about this list of the most annoying construction projects in town. Simply put, this project is just a pure pain in the neck. Granted the intersection was annoying before but at least you could drive through it. Now, to quote Supertramp, you have to take the long way home. On top of the pure inconvenience the project is way over budget. According to our sister station 950 WIBX $600,000 over budget! So we get to pay more while we are being annoyed. This is like waiting for your food at the drive thru and as you’re waiting the price of the food keeps going up!

RAMP TO 49 WEST OFF ROUTE 12

This is my usual route to work. It’s fast, it’s easy and it’s pretty much a straight run from home. NOT ANYMORE! Now if I choose to go to work this way I have to cut through the North Utica Walmart parking lot. (I can’t believe the amount of business Walmart does at 5am!) Time consuming and extremely annoying.

ROUTE 49 RAMP TO EDIC ROAD & RIVER ROAD

WOW! How long is this project going to take? I can’t help but feel for everyone who lives, on Edic road or works, or attends school at SUNY IT. (My nephew graduated from SUNY IT so we love the school!) There is nothing like dodging bulldozers, earthmovers, trucks, piles of gravel and dirt and driving on bumpy dirt road on your way to and from work/school. I guess if you have a Hummer it could be fun. I don’t have a Hummer.

NORTH GENESEE STREET EXIT RAMP TO JOHN,BROAD AND WHITESBORO STREETS

One of the routes I frequently take between home, work and church is Genesee Street to Route 5s. This route saves time over several over options for the same trip. However, I have lost a lot of that time saving by the construction and now the closing of the exit. I hope the closing is at least helping traffic at Nicky Doodles.

HIGBY ROAD, NEW HARTFORD

No lines. That’s it. That is why the new construction on Higby Road lands on the Top 5 list. Recently a good stretch of Higby Road, New Hartford was replaced and repaved. It was an inconvenience for several days, however the inconvenience continues because the yellow stripe and white lines haven’t been put on the new pavement. With it’s higher elevation, this stretch of road experiences a lot of fog, thick, pea soup, fog. I hope the lines are up before the snow starts to fly.
