The policy allowing some Major League Baseball players to drink in clubhouses is coming under scrutiny. MLB Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Joe Torre is reviewing the policy, specifically the drinking that happened in the Boston Red Sox clubhouse this past season.

Pending the results of Torre’s investigation, the league may ban alcohol from all clubhouses.

“If we do happen to bar alcohol from the clubhouses, you have to understand the intent of this thing and what it looks like,” Torre said to the Boston Globe. “We’re up there and we’re role models, or we should be role models for the youngsters and how they behave.

Currently 13 MLB teams, including the Red Sox, allow alcohol in the clubhouse, the Globe reported. Several Red Sox players, including pitchers Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz, admitted to drinking beer during games.

Other Red Sox players were accused of drinking during games so by “team sources” in a Globe report published earlier this month that was a scathing indictment of the team’s chemistry. The report hinted that the toxic clubhouse environment was a cause of the collapse that led to Boston missing the playoffs after blowing a nine-game lead in September.
