Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday commemorating the birth of the civil rights leader on January 15, 1929. Schools and federal offices are closed today, as well as financial institutions and many other governmental offices, and there is no regular mail delivery today.

"Martin Luther King Day is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January. It celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., an influential American civil rights leader. He is most well-known for his campaigns to end racial segregation on public transport and for racial equality in the United States"

There are a number of local memorials and services being held today in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and many participate in today as a national day of service.
