Margaret Thatcher has died.  According to AP on Twitter, the former UK Prime Minister suffered a stroke.  She was 87.

Thatcher was the longest running Prime Minister in the UK, serving from 1979-1990, and the only woman to hold the title. She was voted the 4th greatest British Prime Minister of the 20th century.

Current Prime Minister David Cameron said in a statement:

‘It was with great sadness that l learned of Lady Thatcher’s death. We’ve lost a great leader, a great Prime Minister and a great Briton.’

Thatcher suffered several small strokes in 2002 and, taking doctors orders, cancelled all public appearances. In 2005, Thatcher’s daughter Carol reveled her mother was suffering from dementia.

Thatcher defined her own political philosophy, in her statement to Douglas Keay, published in Woman’s Own magazine in September 1987

I think we have gone through a period when too many children and people have been given to understand “I have a problem, it is the Government’s job to cope with it!” or “I have a problem, I will go and get a grant to cope with it!” “I am homeless, the Government must house me!” and so they are casting their problems on society and who is society? There is no such thing! There are individual men and women and there are families and no government can do anything except through people and people look to themselves first. It is our duty to look after ourselves and then also to help look after our neighbour and life is a reciprocal business and people have got the entitlements too much in mind without the obligations.’

Meryl Streep played Margaret Thatcher just last year in a movie about her life called ‘The Iron Lady.’
