Former World Series MVP Manny Ramirez, 39, was arrested at his home in Broward County, Florida on Monday night and charged with domestic battery.

The police report says the baseball star and his wife, Juliana, were arguing in their bedroom when he slapped her across the face, causing her to hit her head on their bed’s headboard.

Fearing the situation would escalate, Juliana called law enforcement. While her injuries matched that account of the events, Ramirez denied hitting his wife and she declined medical treatment.

He remains in jail, and is set to appear before a magistrate on Tuesday to determine bond.

Ramirez retired from a 19-year career in April after twice testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
