Listen To The Radio More, TV Is Ending Your Life

Got your attention?? I love watching TV just as much as anybody, but a recent study says that for every hour of TV that you watch, you lose 22 minutes off of your life, which believe it or not puts it right on par with smoking and obesity! How they got that number is beyond me, but logic dictates that it has to do with a sedentary lifestyle that being glued to the boob tube seems to promote. But this got me thinking… Let’s do some math:

So if I watch an hour of TV every night to wind down (5 hours), a football game on Sunday (4 hours) and a movie on Saturday (2 Hours) that adds up to 11 hours on the average a week.  Meaning I lose 4 hours of my life every week watching TV which totals 208 hours a year or 8.67 days gone off my life per year. I’m 34 and have watched WAY more TV than those estimates so I dunno, assuming I’ve been sucked in to the one-eyed-babysitter since I was a toddler, there goes a full 260 days to-date already and if I live till see 78 which is the average life-expectancy age, there’s another 381 days gonzo by the year 2056.

So basically when all is said and done, I will have lost nearly 2 years off of my life simply from watching TV (assuming I did so in moderation). To make matters worse, I mentioned earlier that this kind of loss was on par with smoking and obesity, and while smoking is on an overall decline, TV watching is on the rise. Whew! What are we to do?

The good news is that experts also say that if you exercise for 15 min a day you can add a whopping three years to your lifespan! It’s unclear if they meant 15 minutes a day every day for a year, or 15 minutes a day for a lifetime to get that 3 year bonus, but either way, the basic math says TV for an hour and exercise equal to a quarter of that a day and I can still add time to my life…Sounds like a no-brainer to me and most shows have about 15 minutes worth of commercials anyway, so work out during commercials and BAM, you’ve beaten the odds!
