Who among us hasn’t pounded a ketchup bottle in a vain attempt to get the beloved condiment out? Well, a miracle substance called LiquiGlide aims to address this common issue. Problem solved!

Dave Smith, a PhD candidate at MIT, has developed a slippery, non-toxic coating meant to keep condiments like ketchup, mayo and mustard from sticking to bottles.

According to Smith, the coating doesn’t just make pouring condiments easy– it could also save food which otherwise might be discarded. “If all those bottles had our coating, we estimate that we could save about one million tons of food from being thrown out every year,” he said.

Smith also hopes to use the coating in industrial applications. “We were really interested in — and still are — using this coating for anti-icing, or for preventing clogs that form in oil and gas lines, or for non-wetting applications like, say, on windshields,” he said. Mmm. Doesn’t that sound tasty?
