Sports fans know LeBron James for his prowess on the basketball court, but many don’t know he was once a standout football player as well.

On Tuesday, the NBA star surprised members of the football squad at his former high school, St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, Ohio, by suiting up and joining them for a late-afternoon practice. And while players were told not to tackle him, starting quarterback Kevin Besser was impressed with James’ skill.

“I’m not gonna lie, it was pretty cool to see him out there,” Besser said. “He caught everything, he didn’t drop a pass. I probably threw six or seven passes his way and he went up and got everything.”

James was an All-State wide-receiver before declaring for the NBA Draft out of the prep ranks in 2003, but it seems he still wonders “what if?”

After the practice session, the hoopster took to his Twitter account and wrote, “Just got done practicing with the St. V Varsity football team, full pads and all. Felt great being back on the field. Should I?”
