Neil Druckmann, lead writer of The Last of Us and its upcoming Hollywood film, recently told MCV that the movie's events won't all be completely taken straight from the story of the game.

Druckmann, who also directed the game with Bruce Straley, says that the movie's script has required significant revisions from the story of the game, letting us all know we should be tempering our emotions just a bit.

"In two hours you can't tell the same kind of story that you can in a game like The Last of Us, which is 15 hours," Druckmann says. "I'm in the middle of it now, and it's been super difficult because there's so much that happens in The Last of Us – even just in the cinematics – that can't fit in a film, let alone all the gameplay in-between and dialogue."

Druckmann reassures MCV that the core relationship between Joel and Ellie will remain intact, but the events surrounding that relationship will be what differs from the game.

We have two necessities: we need Tess, and we need the ending to stay intact. We also hope Bill is included, to show what Joel could have been like if he completely threw his emotions away and focused 100% on his own survival. Otherwise, we have full faith in Neil Druckmann's choices in scriptwriting. After all, there's no one else more qualified to write the movie adaptation than the guy who wrote the original story, so whatever Druckmann wants to do is fine by us.
