The co-founder of id Software and legendary developer of Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein 3D has announced his anticipated return to game development.

Joystiq reports that John Romero has announced he is working on a new shooter for the first time in over 14 years. This announcement was made last night during Joystiq's Podcast recorded at Gamescom. Also featured in the Podcast were Mike Bithell, the developer of Thomas Was Alone, and John's wife, Brenda Romero, who is also a veteran game designer.

John Romero is a co-founder of id Software and was one of the head designers for Doom, Quake and Wolftenstein 3D. John Carmack and Romero are two of the biggest names responsible for the popularization of the first-person shooter in early-to-mid 1990s.

"I'm working on several games at once right now. But [Brenda] had mentioned earlier that I'm working with a concept artist, and so I've got some cool imagery for the main character," Romero said. "I haven't made a shooter since 2000. So I'm basically starting to work on another one."

Expect this new shooter to come from Romero's personal studio, Romero Games. The last game Romero designed was Daikatana in 2000.
