An interview that appeared in the Washington Post nine days ago was, as it turned out, the last interview former Penn State coach Joe Paterno would give.

Post reporter Sally Jenkins visited the Paterno family home in State College and spoke at length with Paterno.  They covered his health and his coming to grips with the scandal that spelled the end to his half-century career.

“I didn’t know exactly how to handle it and I was afraid to do something that might jeopardize what the university procedure was,” he said. “So I backed away and turned it over to some other people, people I thought would have a little more expertise than I did. It didn’t work out that way.”
