Ikea’s Swedish Meatballs Found to Contain Horsemeat

So far America has been spared in the horsemeat scandal that began in Ireland last month. Which is good news for all of us who never developed a taste for Mr. Ed.

But the problem of ground “beef” that turns out to be part horse is popping up in more and more European countries.

The latest being the Czech Republic, where veterinarian officials found horse meat in the frozen Swedish meatballs that were to be served in the nation’s IKEAs.

An IKEA spokesman conceded meat from the same batch had been sent to Slovakia, Hungary, France, Britain, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Greece, Cyprus and Ireland. He added that all the equine-tainted meatballs had been pulled from the retailer’s shelves.

The horsemeat scandal is becoming a diplomatic issue over in Europe, as countries blame each other for the spread of the un-appetizing food. Then there is the issue of what to do with the ten of thousands of pounds of horse-tainted meat that has been confiscated.

Some government officials have suggested it be used to feed the poor, whereas others argue that would be an insult to lower income people.

Do you think it is ever appropriate for man to eat horse?
