Ides Of March – The Day Julius Caesar Was Assasinated: But, What Does ‘Ides’ Even Mean?

The Romans invented the calendar we use today and something very important happened today in Roman history that was forever marked as the Ides of March, but what happened? Turns out this was the day that Julius Caesar met his demise by the hand of Brutus and his gang of angry senate members. Man politics was ROUGH back then!! But what does ‘Ides’ Mean?

ven though we use the Roman calendar, there is one difference from the original. They didn’t speak of the days in sequential numbers. Instead they counted back from three fixed points in the month, the Nones (the 5th or 7th depending on the length of the month), the Ides (13th or 15th) and the Kalends (the 1st of the next month). So, why was this chosen for Caesar’s assasination?

Well, Caesar knew he was in trouble and a seer (modern day psychic) told Caesar he would bite the dust no later than the Ides of March. So, the Ides comes and Casar got cocky with the seer that he’s still alive and flaunts it, but the seer reminds him that the day wasn’t over yet and history says the rest. History also says that on the same date 4 years later, his death was avenged and a few hundred senators lost their lives… Man, can you imagine if our politicians solved their problems in this manner? thank God that kind of barbarism doesn’t exist in our nation’s politics, however the word IS mightier than the sword is it not?
