The first 'I Origins' trailer has arrived, and the film seems like a suitable follow-up from the team of writer/director Mike Cahill and star Brit Marling, who first worked together a couple of years ago on 'Another Earth.' The pair have returned with another strange but seemingly less subdued sci-fi outing, this time with former 'Boardwalk Empire' star Michael Pitt in the leading role, and a whole lot of eyeballs.

Pitt plays a biologist whose study of the individuality of human eyes ('I Origins' is a pun, get it?!) is leading him to some pretty hefty implications regarding science and faith, further shaken by what appears to be the death of his lady, as shown in the trailer. The film seems a bit more harrowing and frantic than the rather languid 'Another Earth,' though early reviews out of the festival circuit have been equally as divisive regarding Cahill's sophomore effort.

Here's the official synopsis:

'I Origins' follows a molecular biologist whose study of the human eye points to evidence with far reaching implications about our scientific and spiritual beliefs.

'I Origins' co-stars Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Steven Yeun of 'The Walking Dead' fame, and Archie Panjabi, and hits theaters on July 18.
