After a 2-7 start to the season (0-6 in the SEC), Mississippi head coach Houston Nutt announced Monday that he will be resigning at the end of the season. Ole Miss Athletic Director Pete Boone also announced that he would be stepping down next year, but did not give a specific date.

Nutt came to Ole Miss from Arkansas in 2008 and appeared to have things on the right track, going 18-8 in his first two seasons, the Rebels’ best back-to-back years since the 1960s. But many of those victories came with the recruits of former coach Ed Orgeron. Since the start of the 2010 season, with more of Nutt’s own players, the Rebels have gone just 6-15 and have lost 12 straight conference games.

Boone has served as Mississippi’s athletic director since 2002, after a previous stint from 1995 to 1998, and has gone through three different football coaches (David Cutcliffe, Orgeron and Nutt) in that time.

Nutt is scheduled to make $2.7 million this year and has a $6 million buyout in his contract. He will coach the Rebels in their final three games against Louisiana Tech, LSU and Mississippi State.

Ole Miss officials said former Rebels quarterback Archie Manning and Mike Glenn, executive vice president at FedEx, would lead the search committee that will choose a new athletics director and football coach.
