I was at the Redbox yesterday to grab a movie for the kids when the machine asks me if I wanted to get a free game too. Couldn't hurt, right? So I select one and take em both home. Once I found a couple minutes of downtime (aka, demanded that the kids retreat to the playroom) I decided to pop in said game and decompress. Next thing I know my Xbox starts playing some Neo-soul and after close inspection, I realize that somebody has swapped the real game for an audio CD with a scanned and printed label pasted on top!

Being that I'm not as avid a gamer as I was years ago, I was more flabbergasted than upset, but decided to place a call to Redbox anyway (1.866.733.2693) to find out what's up. Turns out this is an extremely common epidemic and they offered me a couple of free rentals for my troubles. The rep, Daniel also said that there were only four other people that had rented that game before me, so tracking down the culprit would be surprisingly easy. The scammer's penalty? Banned from Redbox for life.

Seems to me that's not all that severe as thieves can still keep their prize w/o fear of litigation, sign up for a new Redbox account under a false identity and a prepaid credit card and just keep on ripping off games and DVDs to their heart's content. What a sad world this is. Oh well, free rentals here I come, at least until Redbox decides to discontinue game service on account of this exploit.
