Joan Hamlin, the grandmother of Olympian and World Cup gold medal luger Erin Hamlin, is dead following an accident on Route 365 in Trenton, New York.

The 75-year-old from Remsen was the passenger in a car driven by 78-year-old Nancy Herrick, also of Remsen, whom authorities believe lost control of her car on the ice and slush-covered road, hitting a car driven by David Eaton of Ohio, New York.

He was treated at the scene for minor injuries.  Both Herrick and Hamlin had to be pulled from the car using the Jaws of Life.

The accident forced the closure of Route 365 for five hours.  Its cause remains under investigation.

Hamlin was just recently named to Team USA for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
