One of my biggest pet peeves about driving in Utica is how people can never use their signals downtown. It happens on a daily basis. It’s really bad near the new roundabout. Honestly is it that hard to flip the little signal stick in your car? I think not.

According to a new study, more accidents are caused by drivers who either neglect to use their turn signals or neglect to turn them off. The Society of Automotive Engineers believes it's a problem that's responsible for 2 million accidents each year. Over 2 million accidents could have been avoided if people knew how to drive. The study also found that drivers neglect to properly use their turn signals 48-percent of the time.

“This is a first of its kind report on a subject that amazingly, has never been studied,” said Richard Ponziani, P.E., President of RLP Engineering and author of the report. “all drivers have an ongoing duty to use it, just as they have a duty to stop at a stop sign or at a red light.”

When is it not ok to use your signal?
