Get acquainted with the Dales' Exalted Plains, one of the new environments in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

The BioWare blog was updated with this look at the Exalted Plains area. It's described as "a massive stretch of land ravaged by civil war and ripe for exploration," making it a storied environment.

Because of the effects of the civil war, the Dalish elves have been driven out of the area and forced to seek out safer homes away from the fighting. Since this land was the site of many battles, bodies of fallen soldiers have been known to rise up from the loam of the earth. Sounds like fun to us.

Another area of the Exalted Plains that was detailed is called the Crow Fens, which is a cramped area. It is "claustrophobic, creating tension as you wonder what lies in wait for you around the next corner."

The blog continues with information about how the Frostbite 3 engine allowed for more interactive bodies of water. Lead environment artist Ben McGrath said, "It's got realistic reflections, and also realistically ripples and splashes as you walk through it."

You'll also be able to see greater detail in the game's environments thanks to a technological advancement called "displacement mapping" that pushes details out of the surface.

The blog ends with a word from senior environmental artist Andrew Farrell, encouraging players to explore all of the areas and not to worry that they'll miss anything since they can always come back to it later. "Get off the beaten path! Just like exploring in real life, look under all the rocks, under all the bridges, and in all dark corners of the map. Take the path less-traveled and you might something interesting… or surprising," said Farrell.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released this fall on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
