Elton John and his partner David Furnish are proud to be parents, but they know there’s a long road ahead. John tells Radio Times that he’s worried for his son Zachary, knowing that there may be teasing about his parents.

The singer explained, “Being the child of someone famous is a huge ball and chain around your ankles. It’s going to be very difficult … At school other children will say, ‘You don’t have a mummy.’ We’ve come a long way, but there’s still homophobia and will be until a new generation of parents don’t instill it in their children.”

John and Furnish became parents in December 2010 when a surrogate gave birth to their child. The couple has since discussed the possibility of another child and reported that they open to dealing with another surrogate that could give birth either later this year or in 2013.

John recently expressed his gratitude to rap icon Jay-Z, after he publicly came out in support of gay marriage. The singer said he called Jay-Z personally to thank him for using his stature as one of the most prominent role models in African-American society to stop discrimination.
