Remember that rumored $500 million budget Activision invested into Destiny? Turns out it would have been a good investment either way.

Activision has announced that Destiny has sold more than $325 million worldwide within the first five days of its release. We recently reported that Destiny's day one launch saw $500 million based on audience demand, pre-orders, what was shipped out to retailers and first party orders. While there's still $175 million worth of Destiny games still on store shelves out there in the wild, it's crazy to think that a new franchise sold that much in less than its first week of launch. Destiny has become the highest selling new gaming franchise launch of all time.

"Destiny fans played more than 100 million hours of the game in the first week. That's on par with the engagement levels of our most popular Call of Duty® games, which obviously is an industry leader," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO, Activision Publishing. "Millions of gamers are having a great time playing Destiny and can't put down their controllers. And this is just the beginning. Destiny is a platform that will grow and evolve and we will continue to work closely with our partners at Bungie to bring a long line of new experiences and content to life in the game."

Say what you want about Destiny's minimal story, but it's still tremendously successful. This pretty much guarantees that Activision will be hounding Bungie to make sure they're working on a sequel. Unfortunately, this success also means that other publishers are going to keep pushing their developers to have simultaneous last-gen and current-gen releases of all their big games for the sake of making more money.

Think of all the space weed Activision could buy.
