Bungie has opened the floodgates by allowing all digitally downloaded versions of Destiny on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 upgrade to the digital, current-gen editions of the game for free.

Activision and Bungie have decided to give all last-gen players who download their games digitally a chance for a free upgrade. Buying or redeeming Destiny's Digital Base game, digital Guardian Edition or its Expansion Pass before Jan. 15, 2015 will let you upgrade to the current-gen version for free. This means that Xbox 360 users who downloaded Destiny will be able to upgrade to the digital Xbox One edition for free. The same goes for PlayStation 3 users going to PS4.

Unfortunately, Bungie has not said anything about crossing over from Xbox 360 to PS4 or from PS3 to Xbox One. Given your characters will be linked to your Bungie account, we have a feeling you will be able to at least move your characters, but the company has not commented about offering the free digital upgrade to those crossing over to a different brand.

According to Bungie, all you need to do is log onto your PS4 with the same online account (PSN ID) you used to download the digital PS3 version. You just find Destiny on the online store and should be able to download it for free. The same goes for Xbox 360 users upgrading to Xbox One.

Bungie claims that all digital content, whether it's your Expansion Pass or unlocked in-game gear from your pre-order, will crossover. Don't forget, this deal ends on Jan. 15, which is good for our lucky readers who are getting a PS4 or Xbox One this holiday season.
