Let’s jump in our time machines and take a trip back to June 14th of 1970. Eric Clapton’s band, “Derek and The Dominoes,” made their live debut in Britain. Clapton got the idea to form the band after they played together on George Harrison’s first solo album, All Things Must Pass. They released only one studio album, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs. It was a bomb when it first came out in November of 1970. Many blame how the band was promoted because it wasn’t promoted using Clapton’s name. Let’s take a look at Layla and our classic album cover of the day.

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs peaked at #16 on Billboard’s Pop Albums chart and was certified gold by the RIAA. The album again made the Billboard 200 in 1972, 1974 and in 1977. In 2011, it was charted in Britain, peaking at No. 68. In 2000, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2003 the TV network VH1 named Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs the 89th greatest album of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 115 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
