Brazilian Girl Sells Her Virginity for $780,000

Her name is Catarina and is 20 years old and for whatever reason hasn't lost her virginity yet, but decided she could take an unforgettable experience and make it even more unforgettable (or forgettable really) by selling herself to the highest bidding random stranger at an online auction.

Okay, my first thought after that eyebrow-raising headline was, "Um, is that legal?!?" Apparently so. Weird? That too.The rest of my thoughts center around the ethics of this stunt. It's actually part of a documentary where both Catarina and a male counterpart were auctioning off their virginity and interestingly enough, the guy only fetched $3,000 for his. Hers was up to $190k by the time the last day of the auction rolled around, but it didn't stay there long and after a bidding war between a handful of guys a guy in Japan finally closed the competition out with his over three-quarters of a million dollar bid. SOLD! All that for one hour with a girl who has no idea what to do between the sheets, Wow. But still, how in the world are they going to sidestep prostitution charges because she's obviously trading sex for money right?

Well, the producer of the documentary whose idea this was is going to circumvent the law by having the act take place aboard a plane that is flying from Australia to the U.S. over the sea rather than land. Again, wow. Now are you ready for the third wow? She says she's going to donate as much as 90% of her 'winnings' to a charity to help build houses in her home country. She also doesn't see her one-time fling as prostitution:

"If you only do it once in your life then you are not a prostitute, just like if you take one amazing photograph it does not automatically make you a photographer," she said, according to the Daily Mail. "The auction is just business, I'm a romantic girl at heart and believe in love. But this will make a big difference to my area."

Um, prostitutes also believe in love and view their craft as simply business too. Good luck with that one and also good luck in getting a charity to accept funds raised in this manner. Sorry chickie. you're the victim of clever rationale that is probably going to lead you to a world of hurt (no pun intended). Thankfully her Japanese benefactor is going to be tested and will be wearing protection but I'm afraid she's in for some emotional damage down the road that can't be protected by latex. Not to mention when you're in the public eye you open yourself up to not only praise but also criticism and much of it can be harsh. Good luck Catarina, I really hope you come out on top with this one (pun not intended again).
