Bobby Valentine will be the new Boston Red Sox manager, as soon as the two sides get the contract worked out. The 61-year-old former Rangers and Mets skippper has a career record of 1,117–1,072 as a manager, but he hasn’t managed in the US since 2002.

Valentine found success in Japan where in 2005 he guided the Chiba Lotte Marines to their first Japan Series title in 31 years.

After Boston’s epic September collapse which resulted in failing to make the playoffs, management decided it was time for a change and let Terry Francona go this fall.

“This is a great organization with a great team and a great city and ballpark,’’ Valentine said. “That is very attractive. I don’t think that anywhere else where there’s been a job opening that my name has been mentioned there have been as many fabulous factors.’’

Valentine is probably best known for his quirkiness and charm, and the Boston media should prepare for a season of memorable moments, since he doesn’t behave in the traditional manner most managers do.

The official announcement about Valentine’s hiring is expected to come later this week.
