A big building is scheduled to be blown up in a very big way and officials want everyone to know about it.

The date for the demolition of the Fay Street Warehouse Building has been set for Sunday, February 9, 2014.

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald and Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri today are announcing that the Fay Street warehouse building will undergo controlled demolition on Sunday, February 9, 2014.

Officials say that the building’s demolition, which is part of the $65 million reconstruction project of Utica’s North-South Arterial, is the largest Department of Transportation project in the Mohawk Valley.

In a written release McDonald said, “The Utica North-South Arterial is the most significant link in the region’s transportation system, carrying 40,000 vehicles per day…The project will enhance connectivity, aesthetics, and local mobility to stimulate economic activity in the city of Utica and the entire Mohawk Valley Region.”

As part of the same release Palmieri stated, “I want to thank Governor Cuomo, Commissioner McDonald, and the entire Department of Transportation’s Region 2 team for their partnership and investment in the City of Utica. With the advent of Utica-Nano coming to our region, it is essential that we have a state of the art highway to serve as the gateway to our newly arriving state of the art facilities.  The demolition of the Fay Street warehouse building is the next step in making this a reality.”

Residents and businesses affected by the demolition zone have already been notified.  Federal regulations require a five hundred “safe zone” around the building.  All buildings in the immediate area and those located within the safe zone will be evacuated before during, and immediately after the demolition.  The evacuation is expected to last several hours.

Anyone with questions about the demolition should contact Jim Piccola at: (315) 793.2447.
