This year, the Fourth Of July falls on a Thursday, and there are plenty of things you can do on your (hopefully) day off in Utica.

For starters, you can enjoy the final day of the Munson Williams Proctor Arts Institute Arts Festival. Here’s the July4th schedule, according to their website:

“*Books and Crafts

11 a.m. • Art Odyssey Gallery

*Sidewalk Chalk Art

Noon • Sculpture Grove

The Prints of Andy Warhol Tour

1 p.m. • Museum of Art

*Patriotic Paper Lanterns Craft

1 p.m. • Sculpture Grove

Docent Guided Tour

2 p.m. • Museum of Art

Bluestreak – 2 p.m. • Stage”

Or, take the family to the Utica Fourth Of July Parade. Here are the details from mohawkvalleyguide.com:

“This year’s parade will start at Sherman Drive and Culver Ave in Utica. The Parade will kick off promptly at 6:00pm and head north on Culver to F.T. Proctor Park at the corner of Culver & Rutger streets.”

Or, how about playing a round of golf at Utica’s beautiful and challenging Valley View Golf Course.

Tennis anyone? Take your racket and head to the public tennis courts at the Utica Parkway Recreation Center.

Take the family to the Utica Zoo, open on the Fourth Of July from 10:00 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. at 99 Steele Hill Road, off the Utica Parkway. There is an admission charge.

Because the Fourth Of July falls on a Thursday, Saranac Thursday at the F.X. Matt Brewery will be held on Wednesday night, July 3rd, with musical entertainment by “Last Left”. There is an admission charge.

Of course, living in central New York, we’re close to many New York State Parks, beaches, rivers, creeks and picnic areas. So, you might want to hit the beach, go canoeing or kayaking, hiking or biking.

And like they say, “There’s no place like home”, so that backyard barbecue might be just thing for you and your family. If you’ve a got a neighbor with a pool, now would be a good time to make friends for a possible holiday invitation.
