Batman: Arkham Knight Delayed Until 2015

Batman Arkham Knight Delayed
Rocksteady

In news that’s disappointing but not at all surprising, the hotly anticipated Batman: Arkham Knight video game has been pushed from its 2014 release date and won’t hit shelves until 2015.

The news comes via Kotaku and it’s only the latest in a series of high-profile releases getting bumped to next year. Honestly, anyone with a basic knowledge of the gaming industry could have seen this coming. We’re only months into a new console generation and developers are still trying to learn the ins and outs of the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. Hiccups were inevitable and hiccups mean that even the most prominent developers and the most prestigious franchises face setbacks. Batman: Arkham Knight is an especially unique project because it was going to be one of the first releases to come exclusively to new consoles without even a token release for the PS3 or the Xbox 360. Of course it was going to have problems!

Here’s Kotaku’s quote from Dax Ginn from Rocksteady Games, explaining the reason for the delay:

Batman: Arkham Knight is totally awesome. The thing about awesome, though, is awesome takes time. And totally awesome takes a lot of time. So in collaboration with our colleagues at Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment and DC Comics, we have decided to extend the development time of Batman: Arkham Knight. Now, the very simple reason for doing this is to ensure we are delivering the awesome level of quality that Batman fans and gamers expect from this, the final episode and the epic conclusion to the Rocksteady Arkham trilogy. The Dark Knight will face his ultimate challenge in Batman: Arkham Knight now to be released in 2015.

And yeah, he’s right. Unlike movies, a video game getting delayed is often a positive sign, an indication that the developer is actually working to make a superior product and wants to work every kink out. If Batman: Arkham Knight had no delays at all, fans would have every reason to worry.

Anyway, Batman: Arkham Knight looks like a ton of fun and we can’t wait to play it. The Arkham series of games have been almost uniformly fantastic so far (let’s forget about Batman: Arkham Origins) and the new entry’s Grand Theft Auto-style open world seems like it’ll open unlimited possibilities for roleplaying as the Dark Knight.

Take your time, guys. Get it right. (And, if you really need your Batman fix, LEGO Batman 3 is still set for release this fall.) In the meantime, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment released the first gameplay footage of the new Batmobile in the latest Batman: Arkham Knight trailer:
