One of Major League Baseball's greatest hitters has died.

Hall-of-Famer Tony Gwynn was 54.

The long-time San Diego Padres outfielder had been on medical leave since late March from his job as baseball coach at San Diego State.

Gwynn had battled cancer since 2010.

The lefty-swinging Gywnm collected 3.141 hits during his 20-year Major League career, all with the Padres.

He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.

The Padres released a statement saying "we are terribly sad to say goodbye to our teammate, our friend and a legend, Tony Gwynn.  Rest in peace, Mr. Padre."
