Right on the heels of the 2012 election where our incumbent president was just re-elected for his second term, it bears mentioning that on this date almost a century-and-a-half ago, one of our most beloved presidents was also elected to his second term as well. Which one? How about the guy on the $5 bill and the penny, none other than Abraham Lincoln.

This was not only an American historic occasion but also one for the world as holding an election during wartime has only happened a couple of times ever, in the entire WORLD. Here were Lincoln's remarks on postponing the election:

"If the rebellion could force us to forego, or postpone a national election, it might fairly claim to have already conquered and ruined us."

Unfortunately, he only made it to the first spring of that term before his life was tragically cut short. We remember him for all he did for our country beforehand especially in the name of racial equality. So, if you pull a $5 or a handful of pennies out of your pocket today don't forget about what the man pictured on the front was all about.
