The season finale of ‘American Idol‘ will feature a performance from judge Steven Tyler‘s full-time band. According to Joe Perry, the rockers will debut the first single from their upcoming new album during the May 23 Fox broadcast.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Perry explains that he never had any problem with the television show when Tyler took the judging gig in 2010. “It was about how we found out about it,” the guitarist explains. “I was pissed off about that whole thing, but I’ve played on it before and the band is gonna play on it in the last episode of the season to debut the new single. So it’s not about the show, it’s about how we found out about it. It was a bit of a shock and it took us off balance.”

There’s no word on what the single is called, or what direction it will take although rumors have had the band going back to the sound of some of their albums from ’70s. Producer Jack Douglas is back, and Perry says they’re nearing the finish line. “We have a couple of tracks left to finish up, just to put some overdubs on, but we’re kind of going from the final, final recording tracks to mixing this week.” Previous reports have the album’s release in September.

Expect to hear some of the new material when Aerosmith hits the road this summer. While the band has previously chosen the hits over new tracks, Perry says he wants to include about four new songs in each set. They’re also looking to go deep into the back-catalog, selecting choice album cuts. He mentions ‘Woman of the World’ from ‘Get Your Wings’ as a song that may make the cut.
