4 Tips On How To Properly Close Your Pool

Sadly it’s that time of year again where we have to wave goodbye to the pool fa-noodles and say hello to the glove and mittens. Even though you may get a few more weeks out of your pool, I know many friends that hold a tradition of closing their pool over Labor Day Weekend. Here’s 4 tips on how to properly close your pool for the season while you’re enjoying our Last Blast Of Summer Weekend brought to you by First Source.

Winterize The Plumbing

If you have an inground pool, you should blow out the lines using a Mighty Vac to blow air from the skimmer, then through the equipment, and then back to the pool. Then plug the lines at the pool using expansion plugs.

Lower Water Level In The Pool

This may seem like an obvious thing to do, but many people forget. Use the filter pump, or a submersible pump, lower the level 12″ – 18″ below the skimmer for mesh covers, and 3″ – 6″ below the tile for solid, floating covers.

Clean The Pool

This is a very important tip on the grand scale of owning a pool. You should keep it very clean in the summer, and clean for the winter time. Skim pool, vacuum pool, brush pool. If pool is especially silty or has lots of algae, Vacuum Pool to Waste. This means to bypass the filter, and vacuum dirt from floors/walls out the backwash line.

Cover The Pool

A tight fit of your pool cover is essential. Your cover should not have holes or gaps where leaves, snow, or other debris may enter the pool. A mesh safety cover provides the highest protection and safety. “Air Pillows are used in above ground pools to absorb the expansion of ice inside the pool. In areas of high wind, an above ground pool owner will find wall bags or cover seal useful products. A leaf net is very useful if you have a lot of trees surrounding your pool.”
